Dreams of a Scientist: Lessons from the Sea
Dreams of a Scientist: Lessons from the Sea is an illustrated children’s picture book that invites readers on an oceanic journey with 20 real-life marine scientists. Join us in celebrating diversity, discovery, and the wonders of the sea.
With this book, we aim to:
Educate readers on recent discoveries that active scientists have made about incredible marine animals.
Break stereotypes by introducing readers to real-life marine scientists from different backgrounds and in different career stages.
Target Audience and Reading Context
Our book is crafted for early elementary readers—perfect for reading solo or being comfortably shared in the classroom or at bedtime. It is also a compelling resource for parents and educators to introduce kids to science career paths.
Why This Book Matters
By following Margo—our curious guide—on her whimsical ocean adventure, readers learn that passion plus curiosity, not just background, define a scientist. The scientific narratives woven throughout our story and the scientific profiles, with illustrated portraits and short autobiographies at the back of our book, reinforce that ocean lovers of all identities can make a difference.
For Educators and Organizations
We are excited to share our book with schools, museums, aquariums, and more! To help make that possible, we have received grants and sponsorships so we can donate our books to schools and after-school programs. We are also happy to create wholesale codes for educational groups interested in ordering multiple books.
Reach out to us at dreams.of.a.scientist@gmail.com to chat more about these opportunities!
For those interested in writing a book
We had no idea what we were doing when we started this journey, and we are more than happy to share everything we learned to help future authors and illustrators. A few things to think about are: What is your target audience? What is the story’s narrative? How are you going to fund the project (check out our media kit)? Do you want to market this? If not, self-publishing may not be the way to go. This process is just the beginning, and it took us nearly two years to figure it all out, so stay patient and chase a message you believe in.
